In a nationwide survey in 2007, Rochester was ranked as the sixth most livable city in America. It is rated as one of the best cities to live in. Rochester city was founded by Colonel Nathanial Rochester who purchased a hundred acres along the Genesee River. Rochester earned the nickname 'city of flour' in 1838 after it became the largest flour producing city. Subsequently it was named 'city of flower' when the flour business had moved west and nurseries had taken over.
